Sound familiar?
Parenting a teenage boy right now is hard. Parenting one who won’t talk is harder.
Your son is dealing with more pressure than he lets on. Academic stress, social dynamics, family conflict, an uncertain future — and the message he’s absorbed his whole life is to handle it quietly, not ask for help, and definitely not talk about feelings.
So he shuts down. Gets irritable. Retreats to his room or his phone. And you’re left wondering what’s actually going on in his head.
You want to help. But therapy feels like a big step — and suggesting it to a teenage boy often goes over about as well as you’d expect.
What if there was something different? A structured, practical experience designed specifically for teenage boys — one that gives him tools without making him feel like a patient.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Groundwork gives teenage boys the tools most men wish they’d learned earlier.
Over 6 weekly in-person sessions, your son will work through six core areas in a small,
confidential group with other high school guys his age:
Understanding stress and the nervous system
Relationships, communication, and family dynamics
Identity, masculinity, and who he’s becoming
Money, responsibility, and real-world ownership
Emotional regulation and practical coping tools
Building a personal wellness plan that actually sticks
This isn’t traditional therapy. It’s a skills-based group experience in a setting that doesn’t feel clinical — because teenage boys don’t open up in places that feel like waiting rooms.
Not your typical therapist’s office. Not even close.
Cole Wellness is housed in a converted warehouse space in Irmo, SC — with a private gym, open layout, and a therapist who shows up in gym clothes covered in tattoos.
Boys who walk in resistant walk out asking when they can come back.
The setting matters because boys — especially resistant ones — decide whether to engage in the first 60 seconds. When the space doesn’t look like a therapist’s office and the person running it doesn’t sound like one either, something shifts.
The Groundwork meets in-person in a small group of 6–8 high school boys. Sessions are confidential. Parents receive updates only when safety requires it. Your son will know this upfront — and that’s part of why it works.
Why Boys Only
There’s a reason The Groundwork is boys-only. In mixed-gender groups, teenage boys often perform. They manage how they’re perceived.
They don’t say the real thing.
In a same-gender group with a male facilitator who doesn’t fit any therapist stereotype they’ve ever imagined, something different happens. Boys start talking. About the actual stuff — the pressure, the confusion, the things they’d never say at home.
That’s the environment The Groundwork is designed to create.
Who It’s For
The Groundwork is a good fit if your son:
- Is in high school (ages 14–18)
- Struggles with stress, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed
- Shuts down or pulls away when things get hard
- Has conflict at home around responsibility or independence
- Is resistant to traditional one-on-one therapy
- Is functioning but not thriving — getting by but not his best
- Could benefit from honest peer connection in a structured setting
NOT A GOOD FIT IF:
Your son is currently in crisis, recently hospitalized, or requires a higher level of clinical care. If you’re not sure where he falls, reach out — we’ll help you figure out the right next step.

FAQ
Is this therapy?
No.
The Groundwork is a skills-based psychoeducation group, not individual therapy. It does not involve clinical diagnosis or treatment. If your son needs a higher level of clinical care, we’ll let you know and help connect you with the right resources.
Why is it boys only?
Boys participate differently in same-gender spaces — especially at this age. In mixed groups, teenage boys tend to manage how they’re perceived rather than engaging honestly. A boys-only group with a male facilitator creates a different kind of safety. The conversations that happen are more real.
My son is resistant to anything that sounds like therapy. Will this work?
This is actually who the group is built for. Most boys who come in skeptical walk out willing to come back. The setting, the facilitator, and the format are all intentionally designed to not feel like therapy. You may be surprised.
Will you tell me what my son says in group?
Session content is confidential. You will be contacted only if there is a safety concern that requires disclosure by law. Your son will know this from day one — it’s one of the reasons he’ll actually talk.
What if my son needs more support than the group provides?
If it becomes clear he would benefit from individual therapy, you’ll be the first to know. We can work him into one-on-one sessions or provide referrals based on your family’s needs and preferences.
How many boys are in each group?
Groups are capped at 6–8 participants. Small enough that every boy is seen and heard. Large enough for real group dynamic and peer connection.
When does the next cohort start?
The first cohort begins in April 2026. Text us to get on the list — spots fill fast and we don’t hold them without a completed intake form.
